Code of Conduct

Adopted February 14, 2017

The Board and its members, as duly elected officials, commit to standards of ethical, professional, and lawful conduct that are consistent with the responsibilities set forth in the Oath of Office.  Therefore, every Board member should do his or her utmost to represent the District and the public interest in education by adhering to the following standards and principles. 

  • Represent the board with dignity, honesty, and integrity.

  • Respect the confidentiality of privileged information.

  • Achieve vision concerning the entire educational system, focusing on student learning.

  • Prepare for, be on time and actively participate in Board meetings.

  • Be sufficiently informed about and prepared to act on the specific issues before the Board, and remain reasonably knowledgeable about issues relevant to Board decisions and responsibility.

  • Respect the free expression of opinion by fellow Board members and participate in Board discussions in an open, honest and respectful manner, honoring differences of opinion or perspective.

  • Abide by decisions of the Board, while retaining the right to seek changes in such decisions through ethical and constructive channels.

  • Respectfully listen to those who communicate with the Board, seeking to understand their views, while recognizing each Board member’s responsibility to represent the interests of the entire community.

  • Work effectively with the superintendent, business administrator and their staff.  Respect the superintendent’s responsibility to advise the Board, implement Board policy, and administer the District.

  • Keep the Board focused on its work of developing District goals, ensuring the District’s financial well-being, and monitoring and improving the District’s performance.

  • Seek to understand our communities and receive their input, communicate with them frequently, and abide by applicable open meeting laws.

  • Adhere to the applicable District policies adopted by the Board.

  • Pursue accountability by appropriate evaluation and measurement.

  • Work to ensure good governance by taking advantage of Board member development opportunities.

  • Show appreciation and build unity.
